Infrastructure Facilities

The department has separate laboratories for UG and PG students. The laboratories are spacious, well planned and equipped with sophisticated instruments like Fermentor (3 l capacity), Gel documentation system, Thermal cycler (PCR), Sonicator, ELISA plate Reader, Cooling Centrifuge, UV spectrophotometer, Deep freezer, Gel Rocker, Air sampler and Binocular Microscope. Basic requirements like Autoclave, Hot air oven, Incubator, Laminar air flow cabinet, Tissue culture rack, Shaker, Electrophoresis apparatus (submarine and vertical gel model), Western blot unit, TLC apparatus, Single and Double distillation unit, Electronic top loading balance, Colorimeter, Digital Spectrophotometer, pH Meter, Magnetic stirrer, Heating mantle and Water bath are also available in sufficient numbers to facilitate hands on experience by the students. Plant tissue culture and Animal cell culture labs are maintained separately.

Sophisticated instruments are procured to enhance the practical skills of the students. Softwares like total lab and UV- VIS 119 were installed for quick and precise working of instruments.

Learning Resources

The department of Biotechnology has excellent collection of books (more than 570 titles and 1000 volumes) in the central library. Periodicals like Journal of Biosciences, Journal of Genetics, Indian Journal of Biotechnology, Advanced Biotechnology, Nature Biotechnology, Asian Journal of Microbiology, Biotechnology and Earth Sciences, South Asia Greenfile, Bioscience Biotech research Asia, Nature Environment and Pollution technology are subscribed for updatement and enhancement of learning resources.

Students are trained in Internet browsing and OHP presentations for their seminars. Classroom interaction between the faculty and students is encouraged. Association meetings and seminars enhance the ability of students. Staff members employ PowerPoint (LCD) presentation for latest relevant topics.

Biotechnology is a rapidly growing area of science and technology. An important aspect of biotechnology in today's world is molecular biology and DNA technology, which has a growing commercial interest. The course at SCAS trains students in the basic scientific principles governing biotechnology, including mathematics, microbiology and chemistry. A detailed study of bio processing and molecular.
